South Puget Sound hosts summer science camps

OLYMPIA, Washington - Explore the world of bugs, the fun of physics and the secrets of the universe at three week-long science day-camps offered this summer through South Puget Sound Community College's Community Education program and Mad Science, an organization that offers educational science workshops to elementary- and middle-school students across the nation. Mad Science Campers conduct daily experiments and enjoy hands-on scientific activities alongside specially trained Mad Scientists.

Rocks, Dirt and Bugs Camp, recommended for ages 5 to 8, looks at the mysteries of fossils, and gets down and dirty with all manner of insect life. Fun Physics Camp, for ages 9 to 12, examines the strength of physical and molecular structures as participants build bridges, catapults and other machines. Both camps run daily, July 18-22, on the South Puget Sound Community College main campus. Rocks, Dirt and Bugs takes place from 9:00 a.m. to noon; Fun Physics, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Participants must register by July 5.

Space Camp, suggested for ages 7 to 10, explores the forces that govern space and gives participants the chance to launch the class' own hand-crafted rocket. Space Camp runs daily, August 1-5, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Hawks Prairie Center. Participants must register by July 18.

Camps cost $135 per person, per camp. Camp fees include all materials as well as daily snacks. Campers should bring a water bottle with a closable lid and wear comfortable clothing. Summer Science Camps are offered through the Office of Community Education, which provides non-credit courses to the community.
