OLYMPIA --South Puget Sound Community College will open its 2006 Jazz Series by presenting the internationally-acclaimed Latin American-style singing of Marta Topferova, alongside local cross-cultural music quartet, Ochos Pies. The debut will take place on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. in the new Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts.

Marta Topferova is a Czech-born singer and songwriter who found her passion in Latin American music. She weaves Caribbean and South American music into her flowing and folky vocals, which extend over the rhythmic textures of her back-up grooves. Topferova also masters the four-string South American guitar, the cuatro.

She has performed in many venues in New York City and across the United States in cities such as Boston, San Francisco and Portland. Her festival credits include The World Music Festival in Chicago, Tanglewood Jazz Festival, and numerous international festivals. Her last album, “La Marea,” was released in 2005 to rave reviews. Her new release, “For Nocturna,” will be in stores on the 12th of September, just in time for her October West Coast tour.

A review in The Village Voice warns, “Don't let the name fool you, the husky-voiced Topferova is a top-flight singer who offers a mellow and sensual take on the South American folk music tradition.''

Topferova will be performing with local music quartet Ochos Pies (‘eight feet” in Spanish), who have similar inspirations in South American, Caribbean, and also African musical styles.

The performance will be held Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. in the main theater of the Minnaert Center for the Arts at South Puget Sound Community College. Tickets are $20 general admission, $15 for staff or seniors, and $10 for students. Tickets are available on the web at www.spscc.ctc.edu/CFA/ , or by calling (30) 596-5501. Tickets are also available at the door up to two hours prior to show.
