South Puget Sound Community College will open its newly revived Artists and Lecture Series by presenting Tyva Kyzy, the first and only all-woman Tuvan throat singing ensemble, on Saturday, Oct. 15 in the college’s Center for the Arts.

Tyva Kyzy (t-vay k-zih), meaning “Daughters of Tuva,” was formed in 1998 and has performed in Scandinavia, Europe and Asia. This fall, the five-member ensemble, which also performs traditional Tuvan folk music, is beginning its first U.S. tour.

The small country of Tuva sits at the center of Asia, wedged between Mongolia and Russia. The nomads of Tuva became known for their throat singing: a method of singing multiple notes at the same time. Tuvan throat singing has been performed mostly by men and has been prohibited for women to perform.

“Tyva Kyzy have (sic) created an original sound in the Siberian/Mongolian sonic landscape and deserve to be heard more widely,” said Mark C. vanTongeren, author of Overtone Singing.

The performance will take place in the main theatre of the Center for the Arts on the South Puget Sound Community College campus. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $7 for students with valid identification. Tickets are available at the door starting two hours before curtain at 7:30 p.m.
