OLYMPIA - South Puget Sound Community College's Theatre Program will open its fall production Southern Baptist Sissies on the Main Stage of the Center for the Arts on Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, at 8:00 p.m.

Southern Baptist Sissies, written by award-winning playwright Del Shores, is an exploration into the lives of four gay Texas men raised in the Baptist Church. At the core of the tragicomedy are Mark, TJ, Benny and Andrew, who battle the conflict between their fears of damnation and their sexual identity. Surrounding the four young men are a colorful cast of supporting characters.

The play is "[d]istinctive and arresting. A funny and yet strangely moving treatment of goodhearted, wacky Texans suffering through an intolerant world," according to a Chicago Tribune review of the play.

Southern Baptist Sissies marks Shores' fifth installment of Texas-based comedic plays with heart. Shores debuted Sissies in Los Angeles in 2000 and ran a sold out show for more than ten months. The play contains adult themes, strong language, and nudity.

Southern Baptist Sissies will run Nov. 9, 11-13, 17-19, at 8 p.m. and Nov. 12, 13, 19, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 general admission, $7 students with valid ID. Tickets are available at the door, or by calling 360-596-5501. For event information, call Cassie Welliver at 360-596-5508.
