South Puget Sound’s Southern Baptist Sissies sparks panel discussion

South Puget Sound Community College will hold a Faculty Senate-sponsored panel discussion on the struggles and resolutions of homosexual Christians on Nov. 18 from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. on the main stage at the Center for the Arts.

The discussion is offered in conjunction with the college Theatre Program’s production of Del Shores’ Southern Baptist Sissies, the story of four gay men raised as Baptists in Dallas, Texas. At the heart of the tragicomedy are Mark, TJ, Benny and Andrew, who battle the conflict between their fears of damnation and their sexual identity. The panel discussion is free and open to the public.

Southern Baptist Sissies debuted in Los Angeles in 2000 and enjoyed sold-out shows for more than ten months. “Distinctive and arresting,” the play is a “funny and yet strangely moving treatment of goodhearted, wacky Texans suffering through an intolerant world,” writes the Chicago Tribune.

The play contains adult themes, strong language and nudity. Southern Baptist Sissies will show Nov. 17–19 at 8:00 p.m. and Nov. 19 and 20 at 2:00 p.m. Admission: $18 general, $7 students and seniors. Service fees are not included in ticket price. Parking is free Nov. 18–20; parking permits are available for $2 at the college’s Mottman Rd. entrance for the Nov. 17 performance. For tickets, call (360) 596-5501, or purchase them online at the new Center for the Arts Web site, http://www.spscc.ctc.edu/CFA.
