South Puget Sound Community College’s 2007 commencement approaches
At 6 p.m. on June 15, South Puget Sound Community College will hold its 2007 commencement ceremony. The event takes place on the college’s soccer field.
This year, the college will hand out 1,402 degrees, certificates and diplomas. That number includes 943 associate degrees, 133 certificates of completion, 34 high school completions and 292 general education development diplomas (GEDs). Some students have completed multiple programs, so a total of 1,298 individuals will graduate.
For the first time in 25 years, South Puget Sound will have a new president—Gerald Pumphrey—presiding over its commencement. Paralegal Professor George Darkenwald will give the faculty address.
Simon Mabior Dau Angok has been selected as the student speaker. Angok is a native of Sudan. During that country’s civil war, he lived in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya before coming to the United States in 2000. He will receive an associate of arts degree from South Puget Sound and intends to enroll at the University of Washington.
As it did last year, the South Sound Super Band, led by trumpeter Andy Omdahl, will provide processional and recessional music. A reception follows the awarding of degrees.
