South Puget Sound Community College hosts Jacob Lawrence’s art

South Puget Sound Community College opens the 2007-08 gallery season at the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts with an exhibit of the art of Jacob Lawrence.

Beginning with the opening-reception on Sept. 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Lawrence’s series of screen prints, “The Legend of John Brown,” will be displayed through Sept. 29. The prints illustrate the dramatic moral choices and life events of the prominent abolitionist. The Minnaert Center will also provide two free exhibit tours hosted by South Puget Sound Art Professor Jane Stone. The first tour is scheduled for Sept. 21, and the second is on Sept. 27; both are slated to start at noon. In addition, art historian and critic Susan N. Platt will give a talk about the exhibit at 7 p.m. on Sept. 27.

A nationally recognized master artist with ties to Washington state, Lawrence painted evocative images that combined color, shape, history and sociology. He focused on the lives of African-Americans, depicting scenes of Depression-era Harlem, the Great Migration and other historical subjects.

The exhibit is organized by the Washington State Arts Commission with support from the American Masterpieces Program of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Western States Arts Federation.

Hours for the gallery at the Minnaert Center are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
