South Puget Sound Community College hosts Expanding Your Horizons

Continuing a tradition started in 1975, South Puget Sound Community College will host the Expanding Your Horizons conference from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, in the Student Union Building on the college’s main campus.

The conference, which is for girls in grades 6-8 and their parents, focuses on encouraging young women to study math and science, fields they often avoid. A registration fee of $12 per girl covers event admittance, materials, and snacks. The parent workshop requires an additional $12. All fees are nonrefundable. Scholarships are available.

Girls will find a variety of activities involving math and science, meet women working in nontraditional fields, and discover careers available to them through math, science, and technology. In addition, they will hear Dr. Nalini Nadkarni, a pioneer in forest canopy research, speak about her work as a scientist. The parent workshop, which runs from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., will include discussions on Running Start programs, tech prep educational options, on-line learning options, and preparing for the Washington Assessment of Student Learning test.

For more information on the event and registration, contact Jeanette Whitcher at 360-357-9748, visit www.starjumper.org, or send an e-mail to info@starjumper.org.

From the beginnings of Expanding Your Horizons, 31 years ago, South Puget Sound Community College has supported the conference. The college is once again happy to provide a venue for it.
