College Goal Sunday at South Puget Sound Community College
South Puget Sound Community College will host College Goal Sunday at 2 p.m. on Jan. 27. The event, which takes place in the Student Union Building (Bldg. 27), helps students and their families apply for the money they need for college.
The Northwest Education Loan Association (NELA) is sponsoring the event, and financial aid staff from area colleges will be available to assist with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is required when an individual applies for financial assistance for higher education.
More than 63 percent of college and university students receive an average of $7,400 a year to help pay for college. Because the FAFSA is the first step toward securing financial help from the government, students are encouraged to apply even if they are uncertain about their college plans.
Students and parents are advised to attend together because household information is a key part of the application. In addition to having financial records such as recent tax forms on hand, a student needs to bring her or his social security number (SSN) and driver’s license. Families that do not have all their paperwork can still attend and begin the application process. Each family will receive as much assistance as it needs. Step-by-step instruction for the complete document can take approximately three hours.
College Goal Sunday is funded by the Lumina Foundation and coordinated by the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA).
