South Puget Sound Community College ESL students ready to release latest edition of book
South Puget Sound Community College’s English as a Second Language Program kicks off the release of its latest book with a cultural event on April 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts lobby and auditorium. The event is open to the public.
Along with picking up a free copy of “ESL Students Bring You the World VIII,” those who attend will have an opportunity to meet the student authors, explore the many cultures represented by South Puget Sound ESL students and learn about the immigration experiences of those students.
The 90-page book is a collection of articles written by the college’s ESL students. To produce the writings, students drew from cultural traditions, folktales, immigration stories and their own impressions of the United States. Together, the articles serve as a voice for immigrants who are learning English at the college.
Since the publication of the book’s first volume in 2002, the project has grown significantly. The original book included articles from 25 students. This year, 150 students contributed, giving readers perspectives from 29 countries.
