Rhythm of Show Brazil comes to South Puget Sound Community College

On April 18 at 8 p.m., South Puget Sound Community College’s Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts will welcome the entertainers of Show Brazil.

Show Brazil brings together dancers, percussionists and instrumentalists to showcase Brazilian culture. The mix of music includes iljexá, which consists of percussion rhythms brought to Brazil in the 16th century by African slaves; baião, a combination of lively rhythms and heartfelt lyrics from the native people of northeastern Brazil; maculelê, a tradition originating from an ancient Afro-Brazilian war dance; Capoeira, a Brazilian fight-dance and game that is accompanied by acrobatic movements; and samba-reggae. The show features a full array of drums and percussion instruments as well as the berimbau, a tall, bowed instrument.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at www.spscc.ctc.edu/CFA or by calling 360-596-5501. Prices are $25 for general admission; $20 for seniors, state workers, military personnel with ID, and South Puget Sound faculty and staff; and $10 for students.

The event is part of the Minnaert Center’s World Stage Series, which brings speakers and performing artists from all over the globe to Olympia.
