South Puget Sound Community College hosts Expanding Your Horizons

Continuing a tradition started in 1975, South Puget Sound Community College will host the Expanding Your Horizons conference from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 3, 2007, in the Student Union Building on the college’s main campus.

The conference, which is for girls in grades 6-8 and their parents, focuses on encouraging young women to study math, science and technology, fields they often avoid. A registration fee of $12 per girl covers event admittance, materials and snacks. The parent workshop requires an additional $12 per adult. All fees are nonrefundable. Scholarships are available. The deadline to register is Oct. 27 or until the conference and/or parent workshop is full.

Girls will find a variety of activities involving math, science and technology, meet women working in nontraditional fields, and discover careers available to them through math, science and technology. In addition, they will explore scientific principles and sound waves with a scientist from Mad Science, an organization that promotes science enrichment for children through hands-on experiments. The parent workshop, which also runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., will include discussions on the Running Start Program, Tech Prep educational options and preparing for the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) test.
