General Education Development (GED)

South Puget Sound Community College is an official General Education Development (GED) Testing Center. The GED certificate is available for adults who have not completed high school. The college offers classes to help students prepare for the GED test. For details, see below.

South Puget Sound Community College administers General Education Development tests under contract with the GED Testing Service of the American Council on Education.

To obtain a GED Certificate, students are required to earn satisfactory scores on the following tests: Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Reading, and Mathematics.

GED testing, offered weekly, is available to anyone over 16 who has not completed a high school diploma. Contact the Testing Center at 596-5238 for more information about the GED Tests or to schedule an appointment for testing. GED Classes, for GED Test Preparation

GED classes are designed to improve basic language arts, math, science, social studies, and literature interpretation skills, in preparation for taking the series of five official GED tests. These classes are offered in the morning, afternoon and evening at the main campus in Olympia. Classes are also available at various other locations around the area, including the Hawks Prairie Center in Lacey, Community Youth Services in downtown Olympia, Yelm Middle School, WorkSource and the Thurston County Jail.

GED classes cost $25 per quarter. Summer 2009 Quarter is June 29-August 19, 2009.

How to Register for a GED Class

Step #1: Come to the ABE/GED Entrance Appraisal. No registration is necessary, but seating is limited. Please allow enough time for parking and locating the building. Sessions will begin promptly at the times listed below.

The Entrance Appraisal session will take about 1 ½ - 2 hours. Choose from ONE of the following dates:

Step #2: Come to a Basic Skills Class Entry session-it's mandatory for entry. At this session, there will be welcome information and testing. No children or guests, please. You will need a parking pass from the Security, next door, in Bldg. 25.

The Basic Skills Class Entry session will take about 3 hours. Choose from ONE of the following dates:

If you have questions about registering for an ABE or GED class, please call (360) 754-7711 x. 4502, and leave a message. You can skip through the recorded message and get to the voice mailbox by pressing "1" twice.

*The Entrance Appraisal is not a GED practice test; it helps place students in correct classes. The Entrance Appraisal doesn't tell whether or not a student will pass their GED tests.

The ABE entrance appraisal will be administered on the Main Campus, 2011 Mottman Road SW, Olympia.

For free parking when you come for your entrance appraisal, go to the Security Office in Building 25 and ask for a visitor parking permit. Use the rear entrance.

Other Important Entrance Appraisal Information

  • Children are not allowed in the Testing Center.
  • If you are under the age of 18, you will need a completed High School Release form, signed by a school official and parent/guardian. You can pick up this form at any local high school or South Puget Sound Community College's Information Center in building 25.
