EDUC 101 Introduction to Education 5 Credits
An
overview of education in America including history, purposes,
philosophies, characteristics, and current issues. Students will have the
opportunity to explore teaching as a profession in the K-12 system,
including preparation for professional competencies and certification in
Washington State. Students will be required to volunteer 15-20 hours
throughout the quarter in a K-12 classroom. Prerequisite: None.

EDUC 120 Child Development 5 Credits
Overview of typical and atypical growth and development for children birth
through age eighteen. Observation and study of physical, social, emotional,
language, and cognitive stages and behaviors. Emphasizes the child care
provider's or teacher's role in supporting development and learning. Includes
at least eight hours of observation outside of class. Prerequisite: Eligible
for WRIT 101 or instructor's permission.

EDUC 215 Children with Special Needs 5 Credits
Approaches to caring for children who may have developmental delays, or
physical, learning or behavioral disabilities. Assessment tools,
resources, curriculum adaptations and impact on the family are discussed.
Includes 10 hours of observation. Prerequisite: None.

EDUC 225 Family & Community Relationships 5 Credits
Methods for early childhood education and education professionals to
involve family and community in early childhood education and education
programs. Understanding and supporting parents and families, communicating
effectively, and strategizing for involvement. Prerequisite: WRIT 101
, ECE 102, ECE 110, EDUC 120 and EDUC 230 or instructor's permission.

EDUC 230 Guiding Children's Behavior 5 Credits
Developmentally appropriate guidance and discipline for children birth to
age eighteen individually and in groups. Promoting safety, responsibility,
social competence and conflict resolution. Prerequisite: None.
