NURS 100 Nursing Assistant 6 Credits
Prepares students to become nursing assistants in convalescent centers, hospitals, and home and community settings. Covers the nursing assistant's role on the health care team, basic technical and personal care skills, measuring body functions, restorative and rehabilitative techniques, communication, infection control, safety and emergency procedures. Identifies clients' rights, mental health, and social service needs, recognizing individual, cultural, and religious diversity. Meets Washington State and Federal requirements for nursing assistant education.

NURS 101 Fundamentals of Nursing I 5 Credits
Develops beginning psychomotor skills required for nursing assistant practice, restorative and rehabilitation techniques, reality orientation, and the nursing assistant's role on the health care team. Meets the state's legal requirements for nursing assistant education.
Prerequisite: Admission to Nursing Program/Enrollment in first year Nursing Program, concurrent enrollment in NURS 102.

NURS 102 Fundamentals of Nursing II 5 Credits
Introduces the theoretical framework of the Nursing Program and the nursing process. The focus is on the assessment phase of the nursing process, with the emphasis on knowledge and techniques useful in gathering data for completion of a health assessment. Includes development of beginning skills in organizing assessment data into the planning phase of the nursing process. Normal and abnormal findings in biophysical and psychosocial structure and functions are explored. Cultural, ethnic, and international considerations will be addressed in terms of nursing process and health assessment.
Prerequisite: Admission in Nursing Program, concurrent enrollment in NURS 101 or NURS 123.

NURS 103 Basic Nursing I 10 Credits
Focuses on health maintenance and promotion particularly in the long-term care setting. Patient teaching and illness prevention factors are addressed. Provides beginning hospital experience with moderately ill patients particularly with a medical (non-surgical) focus. Includes pharmacology, family organization concepts, and pediatric and mental health concepts. Clinical disorders focus on the endocrine,
cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. Application of the nursing process is emphasized.
Prerequisite: NURS 101 or equivalent and NURS 102.

NURS 104 Basic Nursing II 10 Credits
This course focuses on hospital care and illness care of moderately complex patients. Focus is on surgical experiences and invasive procedures. Surgical concepts and fluid and electrolyte balance are considered. Develops pharmacological concepts further by providing experience with pre-mixed IV fluids and medications. Continues pediatric and mental health concepts while focusing on adults. Clinical disorders and management of two patients in the medical-surgical setting.
Prerequisite: Admission to the Nursing Program and completion of NURS 101 (or equivalent), NURS 102, and NURS 103.

NURS 105 Parent-Child Nursing I 5 Credits
Parent-Child nursing focuses on the normal childbearing experience. Family systems and the impact of childbirth is examined. Selected women's health problems are discussed. Tools for critical thinking, including the nursing process are emphasized in both theory and clinical.
Prerequisite: NURS 101, 102, 103, 104 and 120.

NURS 120 Trends in Nursing 1 Credits
Builds on the content of previous nursing courses. The transitional role of the student to practical nurse is included. Examines career opportunities, professional organizations, ethical and legal responsibilities, and legislation affecting practical nursing and health care systems.
Prerequisite: NURS 104 and enrollment in NURS 105.

NURS 123 Orientation to Nursing 1 Credits
Introduction to the nursing program for those who are Nursing Assistants-Certified in Washington and are admitted to the first year program. Orients students to the program's requirements, expectations, and procedures. Focuses on nursing skill validation, nursing process, and the collection and orientation of clinical data. Begins nursing problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking.
Prerequisite: Admission to first year program, Nursing Assistant-Certified in Washington State and concurrent enrollment in NURS 102.

NURS 130 Advanced Nursing Assistant 4 Credits
Preparation for advanced nursing assistants in hospitals and home health. Content builds on previous nursing assistant training and includes new roles and responsibilities on the health care team, selected advanced technical skills, body structures and functions related to performing the skills, safety precautions, normal and abnormal response, documentation and reporting, laws and ethics related to accepting delegated duties.
Prerequisite: Nursing Assistant Certified (NAC) current in Washington or eligible to take the WA State Certification exam.

The definition, function, responsibilities and roles of the nursing assistant, practical nurse, registered nurse, and other health care personnel are presented. The discipline of nursing is studies from the viewpoints of legal status, educational requirements, consumer requirements and current trends. Ethics and professional behavior for leadership and management concepts for various current health settings are considered.

NURS 175 Seminar in Nursing: Pharmacology in Nursing I 2 Credits
Introduction to Pharmacology covers the role of pharmacology in relation to health care, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacltherapeutics, toxicology, and drug interactions. Uses nursing process approach to understand drug therapy for health problems across the life span. Provides theory for selected classes of drugs. Does not provide medication administration experience.

NURS 176 Pharmacology in Nursing II 2 Credits
The second introductory pharmacology course builds on content from Pharmacology in Nursing I. Uses nursing process approach to understand drug therapy for health problems across the life span. Provides theory for selected classes of drugs. Includes content on selected intravenous drugs. Does not provide medication administration experience.

NURS 200 Transition in Nursing 4 Credits
Examines components of nursing process. Focuses on assessment, nursing history, nursing diagnosis and nursing care plans. Analyzes therapeutic relationships, role theory, role change, and role conflict. Compares vocational and comprehensive education. Provides orientation to program philosophy, objectives and conceptual framework. Validates basic practical nursing skills including physical assessment and basic IV therapy.
Prerequisite: All first year nursing requirements and prerequisites for LPN's admitted to second year Nursing Program.

NURS 201 Advanced Nursing I 5 Credits
Builds on content from first year. Covers principles and nursing management of the following patients: immune compromised, oncology, fluid and electrolyte imbalances with emphasis on renal, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular manifestations, and acute and chronic pain. These concepts will be discussed across the life span. Specific applications will be addressed to acute care, extended care, outpatient care, and home care settings. Emphasis will be placed on pharmacology, technology, and advanced assessment skills. Family assessment and RN leadership/management will be introduced.
Prerequisite: Admission to second year Nursing Program.

NURS 203 Parent Child Nursing II 5 Credits
Builds upon the normal childbirth experience examined in the first year nursing sequence. Places emphasis on the high risk client and newborn as well as women's health problems. Family systems and the impact on the high risk experience will be examined. Major clinical emphasis will focus on the utilization of tools for critical thinking, including the nursing process.
Prerequisite: NURS 105 or equivalent. Concurrent enrollment in NURS 201 or prior completion of NURS 201.

NURS 204 Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing 5 Credits
Course builds on the basic communications and mental health foundation from first year courses. Mental health concepts are explored in depth with identification of underlying mental mechanisms and the resultant normal and abnormal behaviors. Various theories and techniques of treatment are explored. The course includes lecture and clinical experience in both acute and chronic psychiatric care settings. Nursing process is used throughout.
Prerequisite: NURS 201. Concurrent enrollment in or prior completion of NURS 202.

NURS 205 Nursing Care Management 10 Credits
Explores the role of the RN in leadership and management of patients in a variety of settings including: acute care, outpatient and clinic facilities, long term care, and home care. Content will focus on leadership and management skills necessary to plan effective care for patients recovering for extended illnesses and adapting to chronic illnesses including neurodegenerative diseases, select endocrine diseases, and chronic conditions discussed in previous two quarters. The role of the RN in prevention of illness and promotion of wellness will be explored. The impact of legislation, changes in health care delivery, legal and ethical issues, role of professional organization, and professional responsibilities will also be addressed. Students will have clinical experience in the above settings and a 4 week
preceptorship. Prerequisite: NURS 201, NURS 202, NURS 203, NURS 204.

NURS 234 Special Experiences 2 Credits
Additional experiences in specialty and outpatient settings to enhance application of theory. Explores the role of the RN in specialty and outpatient settings, the role of other health care workers, organizational systems and structures, job descriptions, policies and procedures in each health care setting. Students may assist in selected areas of care according to guidelines and clinical objectives. Preliminary and concluding seminars, readings, and documentation of experience is required.
Prerequisite: Admission to second year of nursing program.

Optional course for the RN student. Explores current issues in Nursing and the Health Care Industry and the impact on the practice of Nursing. Examines strategies that can assist the nurse to influence changes in nursing and health care. This course enriches the required curriculum for the student RN and skills of the practicing RN.
