SOC& 101 Introduction to Sociology 5 credits
Human interaction and its consequences; social theory and major social theorists; the "sociological perspective;" social processes, socialization, social control, social change; social institutions. This course was formerly known as SOC 101. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101, recommended.

SOC 200 Introduction to Social Work 5 credits
An introduction to the profession of social work and the social welfare system. Examines the roles of social workers - casework, family and group work, advocacy, public and social welfare administration, and community development. Other topics include counseling techniques, social policy, cultural diversity, and social justice. This course was formerly known as SOC 201. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 recommended.

Explores the concepts of race and ethnicity through a sociological lens. Focus will be given to sociological theories, the major racial and ethnic groups found in the USA today, empirical research, historical perspectives, social movements and social policy in race and ethnic relations. SOC 225 Sociology of the Family 5 credits
Examines the social institution of the family from historical, multi-cultural and contemporary perspectives. Examines the micro (interpersonal) and macro (societal, policy) approaches in studying the family. Topics include the social construction of the family, race/ethnicity, social class, gender, sexual orientation, social change and family policy. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 recommended.

SOC 235 Gender Roles in Society 5 credits
An analysis and empirical evaluation of the development, maintenance and consequences of gender roles in society. This course examines learning gender, the implications in personal and work relationships, how institutions are gendered, the influence of role models and an exploration of gender roles cross-culturally. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 recommended.

SOC 275 Diverse Sexualities and Culture 5 credits
This course takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying diverse sexualities, specifically homosexuality and transgenderism. The course content will examine the anthropological, sociological and psychological approaches to diverse sexualities, particularly concerning their historical, causational, cross-cultural and institutional aspects. Additional topics include empirical data, the arts, social movements, religion and linguistics. Prerequisite:ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 recommended.
