Expanding Your Horizons Moving to March, Looking for Volunteers

Expanding Your Horizons, an annual conference for girls and young women in grades 6-8 designed to promote math, science and technology, will take place in March this year after traditionally being held the first Saturday of November.

Expanding Your Horizons, traditionally held on the first Saturday in November, is moving to the first Saturday in March. The Planning Committee is moving the event from Nov. 7 this year to March 6, 2010. Data from conference participants show the girls learn about the conference and register when they get brochures from their teachers and parents. The committee believes the event will be more successful in getting information and brochures distributed to schools and parent organizations in January than in September.

Formed in the mid-1970s, Expanding Your Horizons takes place across the U.S., with Washington state hosting 15 conferences. Since then, more than 625,000 young women have attended, learning about career possibilities in fields once thought just for boys. The conference aims to increase interest in mathematics, science and technology among young women, provide opportunities to meet women working in non-traditional fields and foster awareness of careers for women in math and science-related fields.

The committee is actively recruiting volunteers and resources for the one-day conference. Those interested in helping can call (360) 596-5268.
