Zanzi, Huang honored with 2010 All-Washington Academic Team Placement

South Puget Sound Community College will be represented by two students at the 2010 All-Washington Academic Team recognition ceremony Thursday, with both Jennylle Zanzi and Tzu-Yu (Joy) Huang earning the accolade.

Gov. Christine Gregoire will be on hand to help South Puget Sound honor recipients at the 15th annual 2010 All-Washington Academic Team recognition ceremony on Thursday, March 25. South Puget Sound again hosts the event, which begins at noon at the college’s Student Union Building.

The field of honorees continues to grow, with this year’s All-Washington Academic Team consisting of 63 students representing the state’s 32 community and technical colleges. When the event began 15 years ago, 44 students from the state’s then-24 community and technical college’s were honored.

Zanzi, a 31-year-old nursing major who is maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, is eager to start her nursing career. Living with Hepatitis C, Zanzi knows firsthand the importance of compassion and respect in good patient care. Huang, a 20-year-old business major maintaining a 3.84 GPA, came to South Puget Sound from Taiwan and has helped teach Mandarin Chinese to students through the Language Partner Program, helping hone her English skills in the process.

Students were nominated for All-Washington recognition through a state program patterned after the national All-USA Academic Team, which Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society for two-year colleges, initiated. By acknowledging students who demonstrate a commitment to success in the classroom and in their communities, the program also brings attention to Washington’s community and technical colleges. In addition to attending as keynote speaker, Gov. Gregoire also declared March 25 All-Washington Academic Team Day, stemming from a March 10 proclamation.
